Understanding GLP-1 Medications

Injection Technique & Storage Guide

Step-by-step injection technique, the six-site rotation we recommend, and how to store your medication so it stays effective.

Before You Inject

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Check that your medication looks normal for your specific prescription — contact us if it looks cloudy or discolored, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Let refrigerated medication sit out briefly to reach room temperature if instructed by your care team.
  • Gather your supplies: medication pen/syringe, alcohol swab, and sharps container.

Step-by-Step Injection

  • Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it air dry.
  • Pinch a small fold of skin if instructed for your device.
  • Insert the needle at the angle recommended for your specific medication and device.
  • Inject slowly and steadily.
  • Hold for the recommended count before withdrawing (check your device instructions).
  • Dispose of the needle immediately in a sharps container.

Rotating Your Injection Site

Rotating sites helps prevent irritation and keeps tissue healthy. We recommend rotating through six sites on a weekly basis: right side of your abdomen, left side of your abdomen, right arm, left arm, right thigh, left thigh — then starting the cycle over. This gives each site about six weeks to recover before it's used again.

Tip: Keep a simple written or phone log of which site you used each week so you always know where to go next.

Storing Your Medication

  • Follow the storage instructions specific to your medication (refrigeration vs. room temperature, and for how long).
  • Keep it away from direct light and extreme temperatures.
  • Never use medication that looks discolored or cloudy, or has particles in it — contact us first.

  • If you miss a dose, message your care team for guidance rather than guessing on your own.
  • If you notice swelling, significant pain, or signs of infection at an injection site, contact us promptly.
