The Scale Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Weight can fluctuate day to day for all kinds of reasons — water, hormones, food volume — and it can't tell you whether you're losing fat or muscle. Tracking a few other measures gives you a fuller, more encouraging picture of progress.

Other Ways to Track Progress

  • How your clothes fit, especially around the waist, hips, and arms.
  • Energy levels and how you feel getting through your day.
  • Strength and stamina — can you lift more, walk farther, or recover faster than a few weeks ago?
  • Sleep quality.
  • Progress photos taken every few weeks in similar lighting and clothing.

Body Composition Scans

For a more complete picture, ask your care team about a body composition scan, like a DEXA or InBody scan. These break down how much of your weight is fat versus muscle — far more useful than the scale alone, especially if you're strength training.

Key takeaway: Progress is rarely a straight line on a graph. Looking at trends across a few different measures, over a few weeks at a time, gives you a much clearer — and more motivating — picture than the scale alone.
